# Chapter 1: The Map
The sun hasn't cleared the ridge yet, but the sky knows it's coming.
I stand at the first switchback below the high valley with my boots on loose gravel and the cold pressing against every part of me that isn't covered by wool or leather, which is mostly my face. Bramble is a warm weight in the sling across my back, still deeply and deliberately asleep in the way only she can manage, a sleep so committed it feels like a philosophical position. Her breathing is slow and even against my spine.
Behind me, up the slope, the valley sits in blue shadow. The mountain chamber is somewhere in there, buried under stone and silence and several thousand years of accumulated purpose, but from this angle there's nothing to see. Just pines. Rock. The pale thread of the trail I walked down in the dark before dawn because I wanted to be moving when the light came, not watching it from inside a tent.
I look back at those pines.
Something is different.
